This reflection explores the connection between timing and stillness, and why the moments we remember most are rarely the ones we rush toward, but those that unfold naturally when we arrive at exactly the right moment.
ROAR AFRICA’s private Kilimanjaro ascent is not an endurance exercise, but a deeply considered journey to the Roof of Africa. Designed by Deborah Calmeyer and led by legendary mountaineer Ed Viesturs alongside expedition leader Oliver Browne, the experience redefines what it means to climb the world’s highest freestanding mountain. From private stand-up tents, hot showers and exceptional cuisine to expertly paced acclimatization and the option to descend by helicopter, every detail has been designed to allow guests to remain fully present to the mountain itself. In Zambia, safari is shaped by intention, where conservation and tourism exist in careful balance, and wilderness remains open, unfenced and deeply felt. Beginning on the banks of the Zambezi, where Victoria Falls reveals a different side of itself, the journey follows the river into the game-rich landscapes of the Lower Zambezi, before reaching South Luangwa — the birthplace of the walking safari — where every step deepens your connection to the wild and awakens a true spirit of exploration.
In Zimbabwe, a journey from Victoria Falls to Lake Kariba and on to Mana Pools unfolds as a passage through some of Zimbabwe’s most compelling and contrasting landscapes. It begins with the drama and energy of Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi arrives in thunder and spray, before softening into the vast, tranquil waters of Lake Kariba, a place of open horizons, island-dotted channels and extraordinary sunsets. From there, the journey continues downstream towards Mana Pools, where the river becomes intimate again, drawing wildlife, light and silence into one of Africa’s most beautiful wilderness settings. Taken together, this route is not just a safari, but a gradual immersion into the many moods of the Zambezi, from spectacle, to stillness, to something truly wild and timeless.
The conversation continues with poet and philosopher David Whyte in 2027. Co-hosted by Deborah Calmeyer, this third in a trilogy of intimate safari retreats unfolds at Segera Retreat in the foothills of Mount Kenya. Through time in the wilderness and reflective dialogue, Whyte invites guests into stillness and poetic inquiry. Here Africa’s landscapes create the space to reconnect with self and the deep recognition that our inner lives are inseparable from the places we move through.

Seven years ago this commitment took form in our first Women’s Empowerment Retreat in South Africa.
