After all these years, I thought I understood what made The Greatest Safari on Earth℠ so extraordinary. This year, something struck me differently. Of course, there is the Emirates Executive Private Jet. Four countries. Zimbabwe — Victoria Falls. Botswana — the Okavango Delta. Kenya — the Great Migration. Rwanda — the mountain gorillas. Extraordinary as they are, they still don’t explain what happens on this journey. The difference is who we are. ROAR AFRICA is African. Our entire team is African. This is the continent that raised us, formed our instincts and taught us what no one else sees. We are not arriving in Africa to interpret it for our guests or handing you over to someone else who has been told what you “booked”. We are sharing our home intimately and that we love deeply. And over twelve days this year, I realized again and again just how profoundly that changes everything.

The journey is held together by a continent of personal relationships, brought together around ten guests. The pilots who know exactly how we like to travel, the route I specifically want to take — that could mean a view of Mount Kenya on one side and Kilimanjaro on the other. The airport teams who are already excitedly waiting for us. To move us with grace and speed, no lines, no hold up, no hassle. The guides, whose faces light up because we are back. The trackers, who read alarm calls before anyone else has registered. The lodge teams, who know us better than anyone, trust us and understand instinctively the level of hospitality we expect.

And then there are those wonderful moments of recognition. Familiar faces appearing thousands of miles apart, welcoming us not as another group passing through, but as close friends returning home with new friends.

Guests feel the affection. The generosity. The laughter. The pride. The extraordinary collective desire to make these twelve days utterly spectacular. That cannot be manufactured. It comes from years of showing up. From friendships earned over decades. From knowing whom to call, whom to trust, what matters and, often more importantly, what doesn’t. It is the difference between traveling through Africa and being welcomed into it by the hands of Africans.

Four countries, one extraordinary African safari journey

Each country contributes something distinct to this African safari journey, moving from the scale and spectacle of Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta to the intimacy and reflection of Rwanda. We began in Zimbabwe, my home. There is something elemental about standing before Victoria Falls, feeling the Zambezi hurl itself into the gorge below, its spray suspended in the air around you. No matter how many times I return, it still rearranges something inside me. Then Botswana. From the air, the Okavango appeared beneath us as an impossible tapestry of water, sand and green. On the ground came one of those gifts the wilderness gives only when it chooses: a den of critically endangered African wild dog puppies — eight tiny pups, just three months old, tumbling around six adults. For days our guests followed their story, willing them on. All eight were still thriving when we left. That is safari. Not a checklist. Not something that can be scheduled or staged. Discovery, anticipation, surprise — and the enormous joy of witnessing life in the wild as it unfolds.

While arranging moments of surprise and delight for each guest along the way — from sleeping out in the Baobab Tree at Xigera to hiking up the volcanoes — we climbed through the misted green of the Virunga Mountains until, suddenly, there they were: a family of mountain gorillas, close enough to hear them breathe. We carried a guest up the mountain and made a lifelong dream come true. As he said, “And now I have seen it all.”.

After the scale of Victoria Falls, the vastness of the Delta and the spectacle of the Migration, Rwanda gives you something entirely different. Intimacy. Stillness. Presence. A powerful landscape in which to reflect on the diversity of all you have witnessed, absorb it, and consider where you fit into it all.

What makes a seamless multi-country African journey possible?

I have come to believe that true luxury on The Greatest Safari on Earth℠ is the ease that comes from being in the hands of Africans with extraordinary expertise. It is having hundreds of decisions quietly disappear. It is knowing that every transfer, bag, room, guide, meal, permit, aircraft movement and unexpected change is being watched by people who care deeply about the outcome and have already cleared the headwind.

The Emirates Executive Private Jet is our magic carpet across Africa. We leave when we are ready. We arrive together. It is the freedom to stop managing your journey and simply inhabit it. And when that happens, something remarkable occurs. People become present. They laugh more. They notice more. They connect more deeply with one another and with the places around them.

I struggle to explain what being African means. It contains enormous joy and layers of complexity. Beauty, a special breed of disaster humor, intensity, resilience, contradiction, tragedy, generosity and an extraordinary sense of belonging. When I am sharing this continent with guests and watching them fall in love not only with its landscapes and wildlife but with its people, I am completely me. That is perhaps the greatest privilege of what we do. This is my team and my life’s work. We are not selling a destination. We are sharing our home and in so doing changing lives.

Our guests are changed by the people they meet. And they, in turn, leave something behind — through friendships, through connection and through the extraordinary generosity towards the communities and conservation initiatives that are part of the ROAR AFRICA family. That is when travel becomes something larger. Not consumption. But Connection.

There is no formula for The Greatest Safari on Earth℠. That may be its secret. We can design every detail. We can assemble extraordinary people. We can remove almost every friction point from travelling across four countries. We can call on decades of knowledge and relationships. But then Africa does what Africa does….

Ten strangers become people you cannot imagine not knowing. And somewhere along the way, the journey becomes much bigger than the itinerary. Not simply twelve days through Zimbabwe, Botswana, Kenya and Rwanda. Not simply Africa aboard one of the world’s most extraordinary private aircraft.

It becomes what’s possible when a journey is created from within this continent, by people who know it, love it and have spent their lives building the relationships that open it completely differently. And perhaps, after all these years, that is what I finally understood.
