To the Roof of Africa

“Kilimanjaro is the ultimate ascent—elemental, humbling and unforgettable, even for those who have stood on the Seven Summits.” — Deborah Calmeyer, Founder, ROAR AFRICA

There are summits that test you. And then there is Kilimanjaro, a mountain that even the most seasoned climbers in the world will tell you is something else entirely. This is more than conquering altitude. It’s about what the mountain asks of you on the way up, and who you discover yourself to be.

A journey designed the way I’d want to do it

When I began designing this journey, I asked myself a single question: how would I want to experience this monumental achievement of climbing and summiting Kilimanjaro? Not as an endurance test. Not as a punishing march. But as something far rarer: a once-in-a-lifetime ascent, conceived with intelligence, elegance and deep intention.

My answer was simple. I wanted to walk, think, dream and inhale each moment with each step.

I did not want to carry anything. I wanted a tent I could stand up in. Warmth at night. A proper bed. A bedside lamp. A place to charge my phone. A basin to wash my hands. A hot shower. A private toilet. And, because nourishment is part of how we care for the spirit as much as the body, I wanted really good food. What I discovered is that these comforts are actually possible.

This journey was born from everything I have come to understand about true adventure. It is not about age. It is not even, in the end, about fitness. It is about mindset. Commitment. Presence. The courage to design the way you want it to be. ROAR AFRICA exists purely because of how I like to travel.

And when the logistics have been exquisitely handled, when every comfort has been considered, something extraordinary happens. Peace, safety, and the noise falls away. You are left with yourself, the mountain, the sky and that rare, almost sacred state of absolute presence.

Slightly different to most—I wanted the descent to honor the ascent. So, in this case you can choose to walk down or fly off. To me, to rise from the Roof of Africa by air is not extravagance for its own sake. It is a way of preserving the magnitude of what has just happened. A way to linger in the triumph, to see the mountain from above, and to carry the emotion of that moment savoring its glory.

Led by the world’s finest — achieved by those with the courage to say yes

This private ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro is led by Ed Viesturs—the only American to have summited all fourteen 8,000-metre peaks without supplemental oxygen—and expedition leader Oliver Browne. Combined their credentials are unmatched on any mountain on earth. Every stage of the ascent—the pacing, the acclimatisation, the decision-making—are in their hands.

“Kilimanjaro is so celebrated because it offers a rare combination of scale, accessibility and genuine personal achievement.” – Oliver Browne, Expedition Leader.

I want you to know that this is achievable. For anyone with a sense of adventure, determination, and an intermediate level of fitness, this mountain is yours. I have seen a multi-generational family sign up together. I have seen solo travellers simply wanting to find out how far they can push themselves, and to share that experience with people they would never otherwise have met. There is something that happens between climbers on this mountain that is unlike anything else I know. A bond forms.

Let the journey continue

In Swahili, ‘safari’ means to journey—and I cannot imagine flying straight home from this journey. Let your journey unfold and sink in out on the plains of the Serengeti. One horizon leads to another. One encounter deepens the next.

After standing above the clouds on Kilimanjaro, there is something profoundly moving about descending back into the vastness, beauty and aliveness of the continent itself.

Places on this departure are intentionally limited, and with our early December ascent approaching, time is limited too. I invite you to speak directly with my team and with Oliver Browne to explore the expedition in detail—from preparation and fitness expectations to medical oversight and the rhythm of the ascent—and to discover how this journey could become a milestone achievement in your life.
