For me, Africa is the very definition of beauty. Of course, there is the physical beauty – the golden skies, the vast landscapes, the wildness of it all – but there is also the quieter kind... the kind that softens you and that opens something deep inside. Real beauty doesn’t ask for much; it doesn’t need words or explanation, but if you allow it, it has the power to transform, cracking your heart open and reminding you of what it means to be alive.

That’s the kind of beauty I grew up with in Zimbabwe, a land of wild and profoundly majestic spaces that shaped me in ways I still don’t fully understand. And in 2005, 20 years ago, I founded ROAR AFRICA in order to share that beauty with others, in the way I know best: intimately, unapologetically and without compromise. Today, every journey we design is an invitation to return to the kind of beauty that slows you down and reminds you of what truly matters.

We feel most alive in the presence of beauty because it meets the needs of our soul. For a while, our struggles are relieved and our fragility is illuminated by a different light…a sort of perspective granting, perhaps. Our ROAR AFRICA journeys are full of these moments; ones of sensitivity, emotion and creativity, and experiences that bring down our human scaffolding and fill us to the brim with awe and gratitude.

The truth is, we are the sum of our experiences, whether sacred or mundane, dull or beautiful. In a world that moves too fast, our journeys slow you down, allow you to feel, reconnect and be changed by beauty, because ultimately, those are the moments and experiences that shape us.

If you would like to explore the emotional and physical effects of beauty more deeply, I will be co-hosting a special five-day journey, A Journey to Awe, in Kenya from May 28 – June 1, 2026 with Professor Dacher Keltner, UC Berkeley psychologist and best-selling author.
Together, we’ll explore how awe, so often born from beauty, has the power to reconnect us with ourselves, with others, and with something greater. Set in the wilds of Segera Retreat, the journey costs $24,000 per person sharing or $27,000 per single traveler. Otherwise, if you would like to design your own potentially life-changing journey to Africa, please email us on welcome@roarafrica.com.

If Mother Nature’s sheer power and resilience could be exemplified in one place on the planet, it would be the dramatic, unimaginably vast landscapes of Namibia.

I love Kentridge’s monochromatic signature style and so I made it my mission to visit the Norval Foundation last year in August when it opened.
