Xigera: The Jewel of the Okavango

To visit Botswana’s Okavango Delta is to understand the many mysteries and contradictions of nature. Each year, during winter in the southern hemisphere, floodwaters begin a remarkable journey from the Angolan Highlands, travelling along the Okavango River, often called “the river that never finds the sea”, before slowly spreading across the Kalahari Desert, which covers much of Botswana.

Channels fill, lagoons expand and floodplains come alive as wildlife is drawn towards the water. At its peak, the Delta can cover a staggering 57,915 square miles, so vast that it can be seen from space. And yet, despite the magnitude of its reach, for me, the real joy of the Okavango is immersing myself in it, and making the most of the total seclusion, and abundance of wildlife on offer.

It was this feeling that inspired Xigera, set beneath a riverine forest in the beating heart of the Moremi Game Reserve.

Culture, Conservation and Community

For Toni Tollman, that connection began on her first journey into the Delta in 1995, where something shifted deeply within her. There was a stillness here unlike anywhere else she had travelled. Water moving quietly through reeds. Elephants emerging across the floodplains. The distant call of lion at night. Nature not as spectacle, but as presence. The Delta touched her soul and, in a way difficult to explain, felt like home.

When the opportunity arose to shape Xigera's future, it was never simply about acquiring a safari lodge. It was about protecting a feeling and creating a place that could honour the Delta in a lasting way.

Toni believed Xigera could become something profoundly different; a lodge reflective of Botswana, rooted in the rhythms of the Delta and respectful of its people, wildlife, culture and future. A place where architecture, art, hospitality, conservation and community could exist together with depth, beauty and purpose.

To my mind, Xigera exceeds all expectations. What immediately distinguishes it, is that it does not ask you to experience the Delta in a prescribed way. There are no rigid routines or expectations. Instead, time unfolds at your pace, guided by curiosity, emotion and the rhythm of the wilderness itself.

One morning may be spent drifting silently through water lily-lined channels by mokoro. Another tracking lion across the floodplains. Another still, simply sitting on your deck as elephants pass quietly through camp. Here, the Delta is not something to be observed from a distance. It is something to become part of.

REFRAMING AFRICAN DESIGN

Xigera's twelve suites balance complete immersion in nature with extraordinary comfort. Designed by architect Anton de Kock and architectural designer Philip Fourie in collaboration with Southern Guild, each suite is entirely unique, blending timber, bronze, canvas and handcrafted details with one of the most significant collections of contemporary African art and design found anywhere on the continent.

Art is not simply displayed here; it is lived amongst. More than eighty artists and designers contributed commissioned works, transforming the lodge into a living gallery that celebrates Africa's creativity, heritage and cultural richness. Every piece invites reflection, conversation and discovery.

For those who have long dreamed of sleeping beneath the stars, the Baobab Treehouse offers an experience unlike any other. Inspired by Pierneef's iconic paintings of the African landscape, the elevated structure rises above the floodplains and provides a front-row seat to the magic of the Delta after dark. Spending a night here, surrounded by nothing but wilderness and stars, is one of Africa's truly unforgettable experiences.

Celebrating Nature

What lingers longest after leaving Xigera is not the architecture, the art or even the wildlife. It is the feeling. The feeling of slowing down. Of reconnecting with nature's rhythms. Of understanding that the Okavango is not simply a destination, but a living, breathing ecosystem that shapes everything around it.

Today, more than 92% of Xigera's energy requirements are met through renewable solar power, while conservation, community empowerment and environmental stewardship remain central to its vision for the future. As a Botswana-led lodge, it continues to invest not only in protecting the Delta's wildlife and ecosystems, but also in supporting the people and communities who call this extraordinary landscape home.

These values mirror those we seek in every ROAR AFRICA journey: transformation, authenticity, sustainability and trust.

Xigera invites you to experience the Delta differently. Long after the wildlife sightings have faded into memory, what remains is a renewed sense of connection; to nature, to place and perhaps even to yourself.
