ROAR AFRICA: Antarctica Private Jet Experience

And so, it was that Deborah Calmeyer, ROAR AFRICA’s CEO and founder came up with the idea to combine a luxury African bush safari with a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the only stretch of land on the planet not owned by any single nation – Antarctica.  Serendipitously, while they may seem far‑flung destinations in our minds, they are surprisingly close on the map.

Together with explorer Patrick Woodhead and the CEO of White Desert Safaris, ROAR AFRICA is proud to announce the inaugural ROAR AFRICA Private Jet Africa Antarctica Trip in November 2018. Patrick’s enormous polar experience, that includes taking part in the youngest and fastest team to ever reach the South Pole in 2002, and then leading the first ever East to West traverse of Antarctica that covered 1 850km in just 75 days – we can think of no better expert than Patrick to guide our guests as they travel to the continuous daylight of the Antarctic.

The trip will start when ROAR AFRICA guests land in Kilimanjaro where they will spend a few days in the Grumeti Reserve, before flying by private jet to southern Zimbabwe’s Malilangwe Game Reserve, and then onwards to South Africa’s Sabi Sands. Days will be spent on game drives tracking big cats and packs of wild dogs and indulging at night in the kind of stargazing that only Africa can offer. After that ROAR AFRICA’S guests will travel to Cape Town where they will overnight at the ideally situated Cape Grace hotel before departing the next morning on a five-and-a-half-hour journey into Antarctica. While on board guests will experience night turn to day, as they pass into the Antarctic Circle and enter that most hallowed ground, the land of the midnight sun.

During their three-night stay in Antarctica, guests will be based at Whichaway Camp, a state-of-the-art luxury camp set on the vast tundra at the base of the Wolf’s Fang Mountains. Luxury accommodation, Antarctica style,  is in the form of heated tents with a separate wash room, a shower tent and a traditional Finnish sauna. Days will be spent traversing this incredible landscape with abseiling, trekking and visits to the 6 000 strong Emperor Penguin Colony on the Ekstroem Shelf. Here the philosophy is simple: ‘Do as much or as little as you like.’ So you could just easily contemplate the extreme solitude that surrounds you, fortified by full English breakfasts, delicious lunches, and three-course cordon bleu dinners.

‘Antarctica is a bizarre place,’ says Patrick. ‘It could just as easily be the surface of the moon, but those who visit will always know that they came to this place, that they stood in this White Desert and saw it for themselves.’ And that combined with the contrast of a luxury safari experience in three southern African countries is what we consider life-changing.
