"Into The Wild"

with David Whyte & Deborah Calmeyer

Welcome to your journey

Remember that you are wild!

We can learn a lot about ourselves from the wild – not least that our bodies and minds so desperately need nature. In the sixteen years since I first started ROAR AFRICA, I’ve had the immense privilege of observing the transformation that occurs in all who travel with us to Africa’s most remote and truly wild places.

At ROAR AFRICA, we call the ancient connectedness that exists between all living things, ecological intelligence. What’s more, I’ve seen how it can awaken the discovery of peace, purpose and a deep sense of self, that has come to be critical to every journey that we create. I am delighted to be co hosting – Into the Wild with David Whyte – world renowned Poet, Philosopher, Zoologist and Speaker.

Designed as a unique, potentially transformative journey at Segera Retreat – one of the most immersive and inspiring places on the planet – we see nature as a portal to not just our aesthetic and intellectual well-being but to our cognitive and spiritual satisfaction too. To bring this vision into focus, David’s words that so beautifully articulate so much of what we feel will be further enhanced by the wealth of experience in practitioners who will focus on breath, sound, touch and energy that will open the body and awaken the mind.

I look forward to delivering an experience where the demands of travel are removed. Where when you stop moving you can be deeply moved. Where I know the outer landscape will shift the inner.

Laikipia County.

Nestled between Mount Kenya to the east and the Great Rift Valley to the west, the Laikipia region is a stunningly diverse landscape home to woodland, grasslands, fertile riverbeds, cascading waterfalls and springs. Formerly a patchwork of huge ranches, today Laikipia is home to some of Kenya’s most encouraging conservation success stories. Segera is a rewilding project in itself, as more than a decade ago it was a wasteland, overgrazed and denuded of its flora and fauna. That is, until Jochen Zeitz, a businessman and philanthropist, set about reinstating the wildlife and creating a sustainable ecosystem. Segera not only illustrates the power of the rewilding process but offers a perfect environment in which to reflect upon how far we as a species have strayed from our own inner wildness.

Segera Retreat

One of the most beautiful lodge experiences in Africa, Segera offers absolute luxury and bespoke service in a home-away-from home. Each of the thatched villas are set within a lush botanical sculpture garden and decorated with just the right amount of safari meet contemporary chic. A neutral palette of leather, light wood, blonde stone are mixed with mid-century campaign furniture and Belgian linen to evoke a sumptuous luxury that compels you to sit back and take in the panoramic views that lie just beyond your sliding shade doors.

David Whyte

David Whyte

As a poet, philosopher and zoologist, David’s writing explores the timeless relationship between human beings and life itself. From his home in the Pacific Northwest, where rain and changeable skies remind him of the other, more distant homes from which he comes: Yorkshire, Wales and Ireland; David chronicles the close relationships that exist between landscapes and histories. He has travelled extensively and has worked as a guide in the Galapagos Islands as well as the Himalayas. His work speaks to the suffering, joy and revelation that accompanies life, and to the necessity of community and belonging to families, people and places.

Deborah Calmeyer

Living between New York and Cape Town for the past twenty years has given the Zimbabwe-born entrepreneur a profound understanding of the needs and desires of sophisticated American travelers. A whirlwind of discernment, insight, precision, and commitment to the land where she was born, Deborah is inquisitive and cultured, with her finger on the pulse of the new. As a trusted thought leader and source on all things African, Deborah’s knowledge and acute observations about the future of travel in Africa have her constantly seeking out and creating pioneering travel experiences on the continent. Designed as a deeper explanation for what we as humans experience on safari, Deborah’s creation of the Rewilding Roar & Restore journey has led her to the realization that her life’s work in travel is to move guests to affect change in their daily lives by offering life-changing journeys.

Kasiva Mutua

Kasiva Mutua may have learnt drumming from folktales told by her grandmother but her knack for powerful beats is all her own. As one of Kenya’s leading percussionists and drummers, Kasiva’s expressive playing tells a story with singular and unique expression. Today, Kasiva is an international touring percussionist, integrating African traditional music with modern styles such as jazz, Hip-Hop, Reggae, funk and more. One of only a few African women playing percussion continentally and internationally, Kasiva plays music to celebrate her community’s spirit and elevate the place of the African woman in music. Kasiva has been involved in numerous intercultural musical collaborations like The Nile Project, 1Beat, x-Jazz women, Coke Studio Africa, etc. She has played in a number of festivals continentally and internationally including Global Fest, The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Sauti Za Busara, Asheville Percussion Festival, SAKIFO, and has worked with reputable musicians like Kirk Whalum, the late Oliver Mtukudzi, Anthony B, Nomoucounda Cissoko, and more. She is a member of Kenyan based Nairobi Horns Project, and backs a number of musicians in Kenya like Fadhilee, Maia, Silayio, etc. Citing the girl child and gender equality as issues she is passionate about, Kasiva continues to motivate women to diversify their positions in music and inspire the young generation to continue preserving their culture.

Day 6

- Laikipia County., Segera Retreat

DAY 6
Ether - Dr. Yvette de Villiers Ether is both nothing and everything at the same time. It’s stillness, yet it’s the very thing that makes all movement and life possible. Dubbed the illusive 5th Element, Ether cannot be seen, touched or feth physically. Yet it is the very element that holds all things in the natural world together... In order to be able to sense the presence of Ether all the other elements need to be aligned, balanced and in harmony within and without. When we run down our system with stress the first thing that we deplete is our Natural supply of Ether. We are therefor "running on empty" long before we realize that our creative manifestation ability isnt working, opening us up to random interference from the collective subconscious... Today we learn how to restore, harnesses and protect our supplies of Ether giving us access to the restorative Life Force Energy that ensures continuous Wellbeing.

Visit Segera’s Tree of Life Forests

Deforestation is an urgent problem that affects the plant and animal life of entire ecosystems and the wellbeing of human communities that rely upon the fertility of the land for their own prosperity. Which is why we give our full support to the ZEITZ Foundation's Tree of Life initiative, that seeks to set aside wildlife exclusion zones for growing new forest cover in riverine areas and open plains that border some of its local communities, and do all we can to spread the word around their strategic objective to plant up to 5 million new Acacia trees over the next 10 years into a rhino-shaped forest.

Segera Stargazing

‘When gazing up at the night sky, it is not you that sees the universe, but the universe seeing itself in human form.’ - Unknown Far removed from the light pollution of crowded cities, Laikipia’s remote wilderness is the perfect setting for stargazing at the remarkably clear night sky. Lose yourself in wonderment as Segera's astronomer takes you on a journey through the galaxies, putting our human existence into perspective while connecting us to something far greater than the self.
