Surrounded by flourishing wilderness, phenomenal highlights include sightings such as massive herds of elephant and buffalo as well as the rare and majestic sable antelope. The reserve is also home to lion, spotted hyena, African wild dog and leopard. Twice-daily game drives in the privacy of the concession are conducted in an open air safari vehicle in the early morning and late afternoon, accompanied by an armed ranger and tracker.

Joseph Dhafana, Award-Winning Sommelier

Joseph Dhafana is an acclaimed winemaker, sommelier, and close personal friend of the ROAR AFRICA team with a remarkable life story. Born in a rural Zimbabwean village, he fled the country as a refugee in 2009, arriving in South Africa stowed in a crate. From Johannesburg, Joseph moved to the Cape and worked tirelessly toward a meteoric rise from gardener to barman to becoming the top Sommelier in South Africa. A living embodiment of the grit, determination, humility and good humor Zimbabweans are renowned for, Joseph regularly competes against the world's best at France's World Wine Blind Tasting Championships with an all-Zimbabwean team. To taste and talk with a sommelier as storied and successful as Joseph Dhafana is an extraordinarily special and rare opportunity, one we are delighted to share with guests on the Greatest Safari on Earth. These new relationships that form between old friends and new friends are part of what makes this once-in-a-lifetime trip so unique.

Moremi Game Reserve

The Moremi Game Reserve is one of the world’s greatest safari destinations. It covers nearly 20 percent of the eastern side of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. It is the first reserve in Africa that was established by local residents (the Batawana people) who were concerned about the rapid depletion of wildlife on their ancestral lands. Moremi has a variety of landscapes, with areas of dry woodland and savannah next to picturesque floodplains and lagoons, making it one of the most beautiful reserves in Africa. It is one of the few places in Botswana where you can see the Big Five, and it is a sanctuary for many animals. It is also known for its large herds of plains game such as buffalo, zebra and wildebeest.

Xigera Safari Lodge

Unique, authentic and pioneering, this is the ultimate Bush experience. The African wilderness is the birthplace of humankind. At Xigera (pronounced Kee-jeera), there is an innate, powerful connection with the earth, the bush and the rivers of the continent. The lodge, which is 100% solar powered, is surrounded by palm-filled islands, breath-taking floodplains and riverine forests in the heart of the Okavango Delta. A pristine lacework of islands, papyrus swamps and dense trees, it is easy to see why this corner of Botswana is known as Africa's “Last Eden”. Deeply connected to and inspired by the Delta, the lodge has been sensitively designed to echo the surrounding natural world. Baobab, knob thorn and marula trees damaged by elephants have been transformed into hand-carved benches, while hand-forged copper and steel consoles emulate the flowing rivers. Each of the 12 suites are equipped with air-conditioning, lounge area with television, bedroom, dressing room and en-suite bathroom. They have private wooden decks including a king-size outdoor daybed with gazebo for daytime or night-time lounging.

Day 4

- Moremi Game Reserve, Xigera Safari Lodge

Okavango Delta Wildlife

The Okavango Delta supports large concentrations of animals on both a permanent and seasonal basis. Through careful wildlife management it has become perhaps one of the best places to see animals and birds in Africa. A myriad of species is found within the delta including African Bush Elephant, African Buffalo, Hippopotamus, Lechwe, Blue Wildebeest, Giraffe, Nile crocodile, Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Brown Hyena, Spotted Hyena, Greater Kudu, Sable Antelope, White Rhinoceros, Plains Zebra, Warthog and Chacma Baboon. Notably the endangered African Wild Dog still survives within the Okavango Delta and exhibits one of the richest pack densities in Africa. In addition to the large animals the Okavango Delta also supports over 500 species of birds and 85 recorded species of fish including Tigerfish, Tilapia and Catfish.

Thursday, August 17, 2023

Day 5

- Moremi Game Reserve, Xigera Safari Lodge

Game Drives at Xigera

The lodge has a flexible approach to game drives. There is always an early start option for those eager to be the first up and out to find any predators on the move or still on the hunt from the night before, or there is a later departure for those who want to rather ease into the day with an early morning yoga or gym session or just a sleep-in before going out. The guides will drive you for mile upon mile in the special fleet of purpose-built 4x4 vehicles, during which you’ll likely see the legendarily shy sitatunga and red lechwe antelope. The greater area is also home to buffalo and hyena, while the big cat population includes lions and leopards. All these mammals roam from island to island in their hunt for food, and to encounter them in their natural home as they go on their travels is truly extraordinary. Elephants are drawn to the many inland shorelines where they can keep cool, while dozens of smaller native animals, as well as crocodiles, add to the magical biodiversity for you to observe.

Dining at Xigera

At the heart of Xigera lies The Boma, their centrepiece of al fresco dining where you can savour the vibrant flavors of Africa while soaking up unforgettable Okavango views from the terrace.  This elegant outdoor dining area opens up onto an expansive deck area, connected to an open-air bush-style fire pit where guests enjoy after-dinner drinks and an evening sharing stories and gazing up at the majestic southern stars.  From bush breakfasts and wild picnics to ‘feet in the water’ sundowners, memorable outdoor dining experiences are waiting to be discovered in the bush...  As with so much of Xigera, they let you create and curate your own dining experience. Their talented chefs have an ‘anything, any time’ approach, allowing you to choose what you would like to eat, when you would like to enjoy it, and where you would prefer to dine. Whether it’s a bush breakfast or a picnic on your private deck, their chefs are always happy to oblige.

Day 6

- Moremi Game Reserve, Xigera Safari Lodge

Mokoro Excursions and Boating at Xigera

Water is life at Xigera, ebbing and flowing with the seasons and feeding the eco-system as it has done for millennia. Primarily, it’s the giver of food for the teeming wildlife, but the wetlands also provide the conduits through which you can experience even more of the Delta at first hand. During the wet months, slip stealthily through the sultry waters on a beautiful glass-bottomed mokoro craft (a traditional canoe) or sleek motor boat to experience the labyrinthine waterways. You might catch fleeting glimpses of dusky bream and silver squeaker fish that throng these parts when the waters are high enough, darting between waterlilies. Following the direction of their guides, you will see the hippos and crocodiles that rest in the cooling lagoons throughout the Okavango Delta, and possibly the elephants that wade on their perimeters.

Bush Walks at Xigera

Daily land excursions allow guests to immerse themselves in the wonders of the Okavango Delta, a region as famous for its tawny grasslands and verdant riverine forests as the flood plains that fill with crystal clear waters each year.

Xigera Spa and Wellness

The healing power of nature is ephemeral, yet undeniable. From the simple serenity of escaping into this untamed wilderness to the deeply humbling nature of immersing yourself in a vast and ancient landscape, your hours at Xigera will leave you feeling revived, refreshed and rejuvenated.  Hand-in-hand with the simple restorative powers of being at one with the natural world, their spectacular spa provides a tranquil haven for travelers.  Meticulously designed to frame breathtaking views of the seasonal flood plains and lush riverine forests, in its soothing color palette and organic textures, the spa exists in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape.  Fittingly, architect Anton de Kock found inspiration for his design in the eternal cycles of nature, reassuringly repetitive and unyieldingly regular: ‘They are the perfect continuum of opposites: of life and death, of light and dark. The Sun, the Moon, the entire Universe as well as the ‘circle of life’, which is synonymous with the wilderness.’

Mara North Conservancy

Mara North Conservancy is a beautiful private wilderness area of more than 30,000 hectares. It is a vital part of the Maasai Mara ecosystem as it forms the northwestern zone, bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve in the south of Kenya. The Maasai Mara is famous for its unique concentration of wildlife, birds, rich vegetation and open savannas. It has been classified among one the Seven Wonders of the World due to the extraordinary annual migration, when over 1.3 million wildebeest and zebras cross from the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara in search of greener pastures (July - November). Professional wildlife and tourism management ensure you have a truly exclusive and private safari experience with a very low vehicle density.

Angama Mara

Suspended as it is on the rim of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, it is said that Angama Mara is where heaven and earth collide. For this exquisitely designed and luxuriously furnished lodge commands endless vistas across the Mara where you can watch buffalo grazing and elephant from the (exceptional) comfort of your deck. Angama Mara is made up of two intimate camps, with 15 tented suites that are independently serviced, each with a pair of binoculars, and with facilities that include a remarkably designed communal area with swimming pool, fitness gym and library. Here safari excursions are tailored to each guest, taking into consideration previous game experiences, personal passions and time preferences. So, whether you choose to drift across the Mara in a hot air balloon, take a walking safari with the local Maasai, or enjoy a picnic in the exact location where scenes from the iconic movie ‘Out of Africa’ were filmed - you’ll discover that Angama Mara is on another level, literally and figuratively.

Saturday, August 19, 2023

Day 7

- Mara North Conservancy, Angama Mara

Masai Mara Wildlife

The Masai Mara is world renowned for its prides of lions, as well as the other members of Africa’s iconic species - leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino - regularly sighted together with hyena, jackal, cheetah and the bat-eared fox, and as you would expect the Mara River is home to numerous pods of hippo and some of the continent’s largest crocodiles. Hone your photographic skills with the perfectly placed topi, standing perched on anthills, Masai giraffe moving gracefully across the plains, and both Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles grazing peacefully amongst Coke’s hartebeest, impala and herds of lovely eland, Africa’s largest antelope. The area is also home to more than 470 bird species, including almost 60 raptors such as vultures and martial eagles.

Sunday, August 20, 2023

Day 8

- Mara North Conservancy, Angama Mara

Game Drive at Angama

The typical day at Angama is crafted around you, the guest.  You are asked where you have been; what you have seen; what your great passions are; what you would like to do and when you would like to do it; – and game drives are structured accordingly. You could leave the lodge at dawn, or decide to go on a game drive after breakfast, descend down Angama Mara’s private road and 25-minutes later find yourselves in the heart of the action – surrounded by more animals than they could imagine: the vast grasslands dotted with acacias are home to abundant herds, as well as Africa’s Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

The Great East Africa Migration

Nowhere in the world is there a movement of animals as immense as the wildebeest migration.  As one of the world's most spectacular natural events, over two million animals form part of this procession.  Vast numbers of the Serengeti's wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant's gazelle, Thompson's gazelle, eland and impala join the search to seek fresh grazing and water.  The Great Migration is a clockwise, round-trip journey of around 1800 miles during which an estimated 250,000 wildebeest perish each year.  Just witnessing hundreds of animals on the plains is a sight in itself.  Particularly because they attract many of Africa's impressive predators.  Lions, leopards, hyenas and wild dogs follow the herds and give safari goers excellent chances of seeing a kill in action.  The precise timing of the migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year, and the location of the animals on the migration route varies from year to year.

Kasiva Mutua

In Africa, drumming is predominantly a male activity. But Kasiva Mutua, a TED fellow, gender equality activist, and founder of MOTRA music, is now the most famous percussionist in Kenya. Having learned rhythm and beat by imitating the sounds of nature described in folktales by her grandmother, Kasiva honed her skills. Over years of hard work, she has smashed gender expectations, drumming toward an empowered future for all African women. Kasiva has been involved in numerous intercultural musical collaborations like The Nile Project, 1Beat, x-Jazz women, and Coke Studio Africa. She's also a frequent guest at festivals, including Global Fest, The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Sauti Za Busara, Asheville Percussion Festival, and SAKIFO. Much of our motivation behind the Greatest Safari on Earth is to create community and share pioneering figures like Kasiva, whom we're lucky to call dear friends, with our guests.

Monday, August 21, 2023

Day 9

- Mara North Conservancy, Angama Mara

Angama Hot Air Balloon Safari

The soft, early morning breeze takes the balloon southwards towards the Tanzanian border, with the typical flight path along the Mara River and its adjoining forest, and over the open plains beyond. This is an unmatched safari – even the lions look up in surprise as one sails on by – and all the animals of the Mara are visible from the air. A flight normally lasts around one hour, and ends with a sometimes-bumpy landing amidst the termite mounds, all part of the adventure. Once you’ve settled back to earth, toast the morning’s activities with a celebratory champagne breakfast – specially prepared under a tree in the middle of nowhere. The perfect start to any day in the Mara, and for many, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Walking at Angama

Agama offers a host of different walking safari options. You could also choose to discover the Great Rift Valley on foot. Leaving Angama Mara and heading South along on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, Maasai Naturalists offer guided walks through lovely forests and open areas in-between. The birding high above the Maasai Mara, is especially rewarding. Walking safaris at Angama Mara are tailor-made for every guest, and every fitness-level is taken into consideration. Depending on the time of day, and the length of walk, they can include picnic baskets, blankets, or even a lift back to the lodge. From a gentle 2-hour stroll to a full day’s walk, you can choose exactly how you would like to discover Africa on foot.

Angama Mara’s Safari Shop and Craft Studio

Angama Mara’s Safari Shop offers you the opportunity to browse through a curated selection of Kenyan and African jewelry, fashion, artifacts and literature. Leading off from the shop is a Maasai craft studio, where you can try your hand at beading or even perhaps have the Maasai ladies bead a bespoke item onto your clothing.
