About Zimbabwe

Despite a dreary economic outlook and its ongoing political woes, Zimbabwe remains one of the region's most beautiful countries. From ancient ruins to pure unspoiled wildernesses, Zimbabwe offers visitors something out of the ordinary in many respects and is well worth including on a southern African itinerary.

Getting to Zimbabwe

Most international flights arrive in and depart from Harare, which still has air services to Gabarone, Johannesburg and Windhoek amongst other destinations. There are no direct flights from the United States.

Safety and Security within Zimbabwe

ROAR AFRICA does not currently recommend extensive travel in Zimbabwe - especially in the absence of a guide. Caution is urged when considering any visit to Zimbabwe. Hyperinflation and the collapse of the economy has increased a sense of deprivation in the country. However, with careful planning, trips to specific areas can be arranged and will benefit the local community. the display of cash has been rendered relatively harmless (on account of extreme inflation), other valuables should be kept out view and visitors are urged to take common-sense security precautions at all times. We look forward to contributing to Zimbabwe's re-growth with many trips in the future.

Zimbabwean Climate

Summer runs from November to April and has hot, sunny days with daytime temperatures around 86ºF (30ºC). Winter days are warm and dry (68ºF/20ºC), with a vast drop in temperature at night, and runs from June to August. Winter is the most pleasant time to travel, and is best for game viewing, however this is also peak tourist season and is the busiest time of year. See more on regional weather patterns by looking at our weather-map guide.

Zimbabwean visa requirements

Nationals of the United States may obtain visas valid for up to 90 days on arrival in Zimbabwe, provided they are carrying holding tickets and documents for return or onward travel and can prove that they have sufficient funds for the duration of their stay.

Zimbabwean People

Despite growing poverty, Zimbabweans have shown remarkable resolve and - on the whole - retain their friendly sense of humor. Whilst colonialism is still very much in evidence - certain cultural traditions and local ways of life are still apparent. English is widely spoken.

Zimbabwean Currency

Currency in Zimbabwe is the Zimbabwean dollar (ZWD). 1US$ = approximately 40million ZWD although dramatic fluctuations continue. For current rates click http://www.x-rates.com/

Health

It is best to consult with you physician about immunization and vaccinations. However a malaria vaccination is advised. A recent Cholera outbreak has yet to be fully contained and visitors are advised to avoid untreated water.
