Sample Trips

All Roar Africa adventures are private and customized to your budget, timeline and passions. The trips below are samples of recent trips our clients have taken each presented with two of many accommodation options and sample activities. During your consultation with Roar Africa we will recommend and help you select lodges and activities to create a unique and unforgettable experience for you with as much or as little personal guiding as you desire.

Budget: Your investment is driven mostly by the accommodation choices and travel season and then usually to a lesser extent by the activities on the ground. The dollar amounts for the samples below exclude international airfares. They do include internal flights and assume some Roar Africa guiding and activities. Most safari lodges are fully inclusive of game viewing trips and all meals but elsewhere activity costs vary considerably. You might want to take a helicopter tour over Cape Town or dive with Great White Sharks.  Maybe relaxing on the beach or spa and visiting a philanthropic project is your cup of tea. Or perhaps you’d like to do all of these and more. Just share your preferences and passions with us so that we can create your perfect journey.

1. South African Highlights: Safari, Cape Town and The Winelands
( 7-10 days, from $4,000 per person)

Safari_Gorah_sunsetSafari: 3-4 days. Arrive in South Africa and connect directly to Kruger National Park. Kruger is a wildlife haven containing six eco-systems in almost 5 million acresand reportedly sustaining the most biodiversity of any game reserve on Earth. Approximately 2,000 species of plants, over 500 species of birds and nearly 150 species of mammals coexist in the game reserve making it the perfect place to witness the drama of life unfold on your wilderness safari. Early morning and evening game drives are complimented by bush breakfasts and cocktail sunsets. You’ll be pampered while you here at one of the luxurious lodges we select to your taste and budget. For example Lion Sands Ivory Lodge OR Pondoro Lodge. See Accommodations for more detail.

cape townCape Town: 3-4 days. Fly to “The Fairest Cape in the circumference of the world” (Sir Francis Drake, 1579) which offers dramatically different landscapes and experiences. Cape Town’s Central Park is a 3,000 ft mountain in the middle of the city. Nestled against it are 300 year old vineyards and a cosmopolitan city. Surrounding all this is a spectacular coastline with fantastic beaches. It is an adventure enthusiast's dream and a cultural and geographical wonder. Activities can include: soaking up the sun on the beautiful beaches, climbing (or cable-car riding) up Table Mountain, visiting Cape Point, visiting the only penguin colony in Africa, diving with Great White Sharks, fine food and dining, giving back (a philanthropic visit), touring Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated), and partying the night away. See sample accommodation gems Kensington Place, O on Kloof and The Cape Cadogan Hotel for this itinerary here.

winelandsThe Winelands: 1-2 days. Welcome to the gastronomic center of Southern Africa. An hour from Cape Town you will find the second and third oldest European towns in South Africa: Stellenbosch (the center of South Africa’s wine industry) and Paarl (home of the second largest granite outcrop in the world). The next valley is the beautiful Franschhoek valley ringed by majestic mountains. Historic Cape Dutch guesthouses and B&Bs are nestled among fragrant orchards. Enjoy fresh produce at open air farmers markets in charming, picturesque historical towns; rich culture; unique indigenous arts and crafts, fine cuisine and, of course, splendid wines to tantalize the most discerning palette. Roar Africa hand-selected lodges include La Residence and Klein Genot. Click here for more details.

2. South African Highlights plus Victoria Falls OR Mozambique
(9-14 days, from $6,500 per person)

Extend your South Africa Highlights itinerary (above) to include a neighbouring country. Visit one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World- Victoria Falls or the beautiful sub-tropical Mozambican coast.

victoriafallsVictoria Falls: 2 days. The Local people call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" - The Smoke that Thunders. There is a magic about them manifested in the towering column of spray, the thunder of the falling water, the terrifying abyss downstream and tranquil lagoons upstream in which hippo and crocodiles lurk. The 'Flight of Angels' provides a fabulous vista of the falls, the upstream river and its many islands. For the more adventurous there is microlighting with stunning views of the falls, bungee jumping 111m (364ft) into the gorge and rafting the Great Zambezi–the biggest commercially run rapids in the world. The Zambezi National Park is located across the river from where Lion calls can often be heard at night and where Elephants can be ridden on safari during the day. Accommodation options for this itinerary include Tongabezi Lodge and Thorntree River Lodge. Click here for more details.

mozambiqueMozambique: 3-4 days. Mozambicans are rebuilding their beautiful country after a troubled past. You’ll find a completely different Southern African experience awaits you. Days after visiting penguins on the beach in Cape Town you’ll be basking in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. There's plenty to see: stunning beaches and islands, a World Heritage site, charming colonial architecture and colourful local cultures. Visit Pemba on the south shore of the third largest bay in the world with turquoise seas, palm-fringed beaches, excellent diving, game-fishing and bush drives. Alternatively, visit the island of Bazaruto - a little piece of paradise known as the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean". The impressive beauty of the coral reefs complements this subtropical ecosystem. Scuba dive, fish, explore or just relax at one of our chosen Lodges, Londo Lodge or Pestana Bazaruto. Get there soon before the tourist masses arrive.

Cooking_School_Langa_township 3. Flavors of South Africa
(13 days, from $4,500 per person)

This sample Food and Wine specialist tour includes multiple cooking, dining and cultural experiences in Cape Town, The Cape Winelands and on Safari. It is a gastronomic extravaganza hosted by Roar Africa specialist food and wine fundi Richard Hilton. You will enjoy the sights and activities these areas have to offer (see above itineraries) plus cooking classes and tastings covering a broad range of South African cuisine and culture and hosted in interesting authentic locations:

  • Langa Cookery School, Langa Townsip. Local African township cooking class in the only full time cooking school based in a Cape Township. The students here are not from privileged homes. They have created a restaurant out of shipping containers where they serve traditional African food to the local community and to visitors. A visit to the school and restaurant is a unique opportunity for you to interact with a community project which is really working. Here you learn about the African & Xhosa cuisine and contribute to this project.
  • Volkskombuis Restaurant, Stellenbosch. Afrikaanse hands-on cooking class in the wine capital of South Africa. Create traditional Cape delicacies: Bobotie dolmades, West Coast Snoek parcels, Waterblommetjie samosa, Chocolate truffles
  • Seidelberg Wine Estate, Paarl. Cape Malay cooking demonstration and lunch. The Cape Malay cuisine is the oldest cuisine of the Cape people. It emerged from the Malay slaves who worked in the kitchens of their Dutch masters. They could not resist adding some spice to the bland Dutch cuisine! You will join local “foodie” celebrity Cass Abrahams – the renowned authority on Cape Malay cuisine – for a talk and a cooking demonstration. Her restaurant is scenically located with a view of the valley behind Paarl mountain.
  • Sophia’s home, Bergvliet, Cape Town. Cooking class and dinner. Your host, chef Sophia, invites you to join her in her home for an intimate hands-on cooking extravaganza. Sophia loves the detail of setting the table, as she believes that this, along with the presentation of food, greatly influences the meal!
  • The Lanzerac, Stellenbosch. Modern South African cooking class at a true icon of the South African winelands. This graceful estate has played host to untold Stellenbosch residents as well as visitors for more than 300 years. Lanzerac’s recorded history began in 1692 when the Governor of the Cape Simon van der Stel granted a piece of land in the Jonkerhoek Valley to Isaac Schrijver.
  • Aquila Safari Reserve, Safari and Game cooking class at this Big 5 safari lodge less than two hours scenic drive from Cape Town. Aquila is named after the rare and endangered Black Eagle that thrives in the area. This malaria free, 4,500 hectare reserve is steeped in Khoi San and Boer War history and boasts 3 pristine biomes of vegetation set in the most magnificent Karoo mountains.
