The South African College of Tourism for Girls is a place we recommend our guests visit.

Every year, 90 young women, all unemployed and from impoverished rural backgrounds, are sponsored for a year-long training course in hospitality, with the two top students getting work placements in Portofino, Italy. It’s a moving, humbling experience to feel their dedication and ambition.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the graduation in 2014 where I witnessed Petronella Nyamuno & Faith Loselo win the top student prize. I visited them in Portofino this summer. The immense joy I felt seeing these two young ladies putting their new skills to work is hard to describe. The incredibly generous support behind the College has such a positive impact on our communities and our tourism. Petronella from Zimbabwe will go back to work in Victoria Falls and Faith from South Africa wants to find work in Cape Town, which I will duly help her to do. The role of tourism is critical and to witness the results of this program — with two girls’ lives changed forever and opportunity now knocking on their doors — has further fueled my sense of purpose. There is so much good in the work we do in tourism. It is important for our guests to get an inside view of what can be done in Africa and for them to understand the positive effects of their visits. I encourage anyone interested to make a visit to this college. It’s something you will never forget and will be the richest day of your journey.
