Madagascar

ANOTHER WORLD OFF THE COAST OF AFRICA
The island of Madagascar is the fourth largest in the world and is as famous for its excellent coffees, fruits and vanilla as for its unusual cultures, bizarre plants and curious creatures (most notably the various species of lemur).

The breaking away of Madagascar from the African continent many millions of years ago has allowed the inhabitants of this island to develop some very distinct and unusual characteristics in isolation from the rest of the continent's evolutionary development. Take the elephant bird for instance, or the giant chameleon. The carnivorous pitcher plant is also worth noting as is the twisted octopus tree. In many respects, visiting Madagascar is like journeying to a parallel universe - one more beautiful, warmer and happier than our own. Of mixed Indonesian and African descent, the friendly Madagascan population has also been heavily influenced by English, French, German, Jewish, Arab and Indian immigrants. The result is a true hybrid culture with a number of interesting features including a unique Austronesian language, Malagasy, which was established as the lingua franca following the dismantling of French Colonialism in the region. Rural communities are steeped in magic and superstition with Fadies (or taboos) prevalent throughout. For history-lovers, the Madagascan history books will leave you spell-bound with real life tales of pirates, African royalty, love and war.

Anjajavy Hotel
A jewel on the north-west coast of Madagascar, this Relais & Chateaux property fronts onto an idyllic and sizeable private beach whilst a lush woodland reserve stretches out behind. Each stand-alone villa is built from local materials and in the local architectural vernacular. Perhaps because of it's resulting ability to partly blend in, the odd Sifaka Lemur or Bird of Paradise has been known to frequent this luxury resort's grounds from time to time. Snorkeling, sailing, unspoiled views and indulgent spa treatments are all on the menu here.
