Lion Sands: Henna Pre-School

The Objective of Henna Pre-School is to provide schooling and education for children under the age of six who live within the Huntington Community. Henna Pre-school was started in 1991 from a donation from the Roman Catholic Church and approximately 20 children attended the school in the early years of mud-walled buildings. The facilities, now upgraded since Lion Sands' involvement, currently accommodate over 200 children. Lion Sands offer community-based tours to the Pre-school on request from the guests that stay at the Lodge. With sponsors and donations received from visitors to the school, Lion Sands co-ordinates projects for the basic up-liftment of the school and its daily activities.

Singita Cooking School- A community project

Singita Lodge in Kruger National Park has implemented a creative way to help the community, develop their staff and staff their kitchen with exceptional talent. It was born out of the remoteness of their Kruger Concession locations (Singita Lebombo and Sweni Lodges) and their desire to help the community. We visited the remarkable school last month and congratulated them on their creative program and success. click here to read more

North Island: Noah's Ark

North Island was abandoned in 1970 leaving behind invasive species-cows, rates, pigs, lantana weed, and so on. These elements stiffled the indigenous species decimating the bird life and marshland that is the lifeblood of the island. The cornerstone of the bold and complete restoration initiative is the "Noah's Ark" species re-introduction concept which is well underway. Coupled with years or research, co-ordination with government bodies, and an eco-sensitive lodge, North Island is a great conservation success story.

Samara: Conservation and Community

CONSERVATION: With a vision to rehabilitate the once lost magnificence of the Eastern Cape's Great Karoo, the Samara dream is now a lifelong commitment. The Cape Mountain Zebra now roam the plateau pastures again, while the rare Blue Crane soar in the vast skies overhead and the cheetah reigns again on the plains. COMMUNITY: Samara forms an essential part of the area's heritage and plays an important role within the local community. Not only 90% of the staff from Graaff-Reinet and its surrounds, but they invite children from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to explore Samara on a regular basis. In association with the mayor of Graaff-Reinet, Daantjies Jafta, SAmara organizes educational visits for the local schools, during which the children get to experience the magic of the wilderness and learn about the country’s growing eco-tourism industry.

Madikwe Hills: Molatedi Village

Madikwe Hills is proud to play a role in the upliftment of the local community by providing employment in an area where there is little and through a community project in Molatedi Village. With the blessing of the local Chief Nkosi and the tribal leaders, Madikwe is assisting Molatedi creche (Mfoloe Pre-School) which currently consists of 17 children. One month school fees are a mere R50 ($6) per child, but unfortunately an unreachable amount for their parents. It equates to a bag of maize meal-food on the table for the family for a month. Much is needed at Mfoloe Pre-School and there are a few projects in the making. Should you wish to make a difference please make contact with either Adrienne or Hennie.
